Chapter Preview from Perfume Over Corregidor
The Harbor Watches
Morning arrived slowly over Tacloban Harbor on June 8, 1935.
The tempest from the previous night still clung to the streets in shallow pools that reflected carriage wheels, bicycle tires, and the pale silver of dawn. From the upstairs windows of the Villareal residence, Petra de Alcaraz could already hear the harbor waking—the whistle of steam launches, dockworkers shouting over crates of copra and abaca, and the distant groaning horn of the SS Corregidor preparing for its northbound voyage to Manila.
The Commonwealth years had made the harbor busier than Petra remembered from childhood. More cargo. More travelers. More men in pressed linen speaking urgently about business as though the entire country were hurrying toward something only Manila understood.
Tacloban itself remained slower. The city still unfolded carefully each morning, as though reluctant to surrender completely to modernity.
